Abstract

The omphalopathies are directly associated with the level of contamination of the environment in which the calf is born and lives during the first days, the passive immunity transfer failure and the late treatment for navel asepsis. The main predisposing factors of umbilical affections are lack of hygiene and negligence in the first navel care, choice of antiseptic solutions (active principle, concentration and vehicle) and way of its application, the housing of products and frequency of asepsis are mentioned. In this way, we will evaluate the involution of the umbilical structures of 20 Holstein calves submitted to two umbilical asepsis protocols, namely: Group I- consisting of 10 calves that will receive at the navel structures a topical application of iodine 3% by immersion; Group II - composed of 10 calves, which will receive topical application of umbilicus structures with policresulen solution (Albocresil, Nycomed Pharma, Santo Amaro, SP, Brazil) applied with the assistance of a flexible rod wrapped in hydrophilic cotton. They will be evaluated by means of inspection and palpation of the external umbilical region with the animal in quadrupedal position, followed by bimanual palpation in the ventral-dorso-cranial and ventral-dorso-caudal directions, with the animal in the right lateral decubitus position, looking for changes in the intra-abdominal umbilical components, providing a subjective evaluation of size, consistency and sensitivity. The regression of the umbilical structures, extra and intraabdominal, will also be measured with the assistance of a paquimeter positioned in two distinct places, first at two centimeters equidistant from the umbilical scar and second in the highest position which is immediately next to the umbilical ring in the abdominal wall, these two measures should be performed after birth (up to four hours after birth (HAB)), as well as at 24h postnatal (24 HAB) at 3, 7 and 15 days postnatal (3DAB, 7DAB, 15DAB). Blood samples of calves at birth (up to four DAB), at 24 hours, at 3, 7 and 15 days post birth, will also be obtained for the determination of the acute phase proteins and immune, among them the Ceruloplasmin, transferrin, haptoglobin, as well as immunoglobulin G.
