Eco-hidrological functions of riparian forests in gradiet of intensity within agriculturals landscapes

Abstract

Forests have a large influence on the hydrological processes and they are the most important biotic component in the landscape for the conservation of hydrological processes. To describe the role of forests in the hydrological processes, it is necessary to understand the specific functions that it can offer, which encompass a set of environmental services. The riparian forest exerts an important role to guarantee some eco-hydrological processes that are fundamental for the conservation of water resources. However, our hypothesis is that riparian forests located in agricultural landscapes posses limited capacity to guarantee the eco-hydrological processes, due to its conservation status, proportion and also by the land use intensity performed in the agriculture/silviculture matrix. In this proposal we aim to investigate the role of riparian forests at different conditions in the mitigation of the effects originate in the agriculture/silviculture matrix. Three study areas will be considered in this proposal: Piracicaba (sugar-cane), Itatinga (eucalyptus), and Paragominas (pasture). These areas were selected due to infrastructure and material availability for the collection of eco-hydrological data in small catchments. We will evaluate the main mitigating functions of the riparian forests related to the negative impacts of the agricultural/silviculture matrix. Therefore, in the sugar cane it will be evaluated the nutrients and sediments input, in the eucalyptus it will be evaluated the hydrological regulation and sediments dynamics, and in the pasture it will be evaluated the input of organic matter in the streams. The stream metabolism will be evaluated in all agricultural matrix, while other eco-hydrological functions will be evaluated in the different matrix in order to understand the effectiveness of the riparian forests in each of these matrix, as well to generate a theoretical model about the mitigating capacity of the negative impacts generated in the matrix due to increase on land use management. The results may be useful to better understand the role of riparian forests in agricultural landscapes and how the legislation and forest restoration programs may contribute to mitigate the negative impacts from the agricultural matrix.
