Technological Improvement of Peanut by the Introduction of new Cultivars and Integrated Disease Management

Abstract

The programmed activities have as a major goal the technological improvement of peanut production in the state of São Paulo. Research lines propose the introduction of new cultivars to the present farming systems around the state, as well as the diffusion of integrated disease mangement techniques to reduce the use of fungicides and/or increase efficiency of foliar disease control. Yet, as part of breeding objectives, and considering the favorable local conditions for foliar diseases, the project also proposes to obtain further advances in the studies of genetic variability for disease resistance. Therefore, the following specific objectives are proposed for the 1997-2001 period: a) to evaluate the national germplasm collection for resistance to foliar diseases and other agronomic traits; b) to obtain and release new cultivars, out of the ongoing peanut breeding program of Instituto Agronômico; c) to study appropriate technologies of production for recently released cultivars; d) to study and improve monitoring methods for prediction of chemical control of foliar diseases, specially the late leafspot; e) to study disease management techniques integrate with new cultivar resistance or tolerance.
