Persistence of romance and figurations of history in José de Alencar and Walter Scott

Abstract

This project intends to investigate, in a comparative way, the strategies of figuration of the romanesque in two historical novels, Walter Scott´s Waverley (1814) and José de Alencar´s As minas de prata (1865-66), both of them considered as founders of the that genre in its literatures. One adopts as theoretical references, on one side, the breakthrough analysis of the genre written by George Lukács, The historical novel (1936-37), and, on the other side, two books by Northrop Frye, Anatomy of criticism (1957) and The secular scripture (1978), which conceptualise the romanesque mode through the history of Western fiction.
