Abstract

A unilateral hearing loss (UHL) can cause difficulties in speech perception in the presence of environmental noise , and in maintaining sustained auditory attention consequently lowering the performance in the classroom. To reduce the complaints of individuals with UHL, besides the Hering Aids (HA) there is also the possibility of using the Frequency Modulation System (FM). FM systems allow you to send audio information wirelessly sending the signal coming from the microphone transmitter directly to the hearing aid, eliminating the losses of auditory information caused by the distance from the sound source and by background noise. Due to the demand of individuals with UHL, and the interest in using the same amplification devices, researches have been conducted to disseminate the results obtained with the possible options within the public health hearing care system. Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of the Frequency Modulation System in individuals with UHL in relation to speech perception, sustained auditory attention and participation in the classroom. Methods: the participants of the research will be hearing aid users diagnosed with UHL, between 5 and 17 years old, enrolled in regular school. The participants will be fitted with a FM system which will be verified with the VERIFIT. The following assessments Will be proposed: speech perception through the Hearing In Noise Test, "Classroom Participation Questionnaire" and Sustained Auditory Attention Ability Test (SAAT). For preparing the results statistical tests relevant to the purpose of the study will be used. (AU)
