Evaluation of frequency, spatial distribution, locomotor activity and cross-mating of Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus (Diptera: Culicidae)

Abstract

Dengue virus transmission occurs through the bite of an infected female mosquito of Aedes genus: Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. Although Ae . aegypti is associated with the urban environment and Ae . albopictus with the wild, these species are considered sympatric, with interaction occurring between the immature and adult stages. Interaction between adults may favor the occurrence of cross mating, with females laying unviable eggs. Urban patterns and climatic variables may affect some aspects of the biology of Ae. aegypti and Ae. albopictus, including distribution, frequency and locomotor activity. In addition, other factors can affect the locomotor activity of females of these species, such as insemination by the hetero or co-specific male. Both Ae. aegypti and Ae. albopictus can be found in abundance in many municipal parks of São Paulo, such as the Piqueri Park. Despite being a place that attracts large number of people to visitation and recreation, few studies have been conducted on the ecology and behavior of these dengue vectors in this park. The objective of this project is to evaluate the distribution and frequency of Ae. aegypti and Ae. albopictus in different areas of the Piqueri Park during the spring and fall, as well as to observe the locomotor activity of virgin and inseminated females of both species, from eggs collected in the two seasons. The hatching rate of eggs collected in the park during the spring and fall will be estimated as well as the impact of the accessory glands injection from hetero and co-specific males in the locomotor activity and in the receptivity to copulation of Ae. aegypti and Ae. albopictus females will be evaluated. This study will provide informations on the ecology, behavior and interactions between Ae. aegypti and Ae. albopictus that may affect dengue viruses transmission at the Piqueri Park. (AU)
