Abstract

Prof. Dr. Friedhelm Bechstedt is a full professor and director of the Condensed Matter and Optic Institute (www.ifto.uni-jena.de) of the Friedrich-Schiller Universität of Jena, Germany, and head of The Solid State Theory Group, one of more active in its area. Prof. Bechstedt is a very active researcher, as can be seen from his CV, his interests covers a wide range of research areas in condensed matter theory, among them one can mention first-principles calculations of atomic structures, thermodynamic potentials, band structures, and dielectric properties of group IV, IV-IV, and III-V materials including their nanostructures and surfaces. The computational methods are combined with many-body theories in order to account for the excitation aspects, in particular in optical studies. The team of the Group of Semiconductor Materials and Nanotechnology (GMSN) of ITA has long time collaboration with the group headed by Prof. Friedhelm Bechstedt. Two members of GMSN, Prof. Lara K. Teles and Prof. M. Marques, spent part of their PhD in the group of Prof. Bechstedt with a FAPESP scholarship, maintaining the link with him after it. Furthermore, the GMSN received in recent years, twice of its members, Professor J. Furthmüller (in 2007 and in 2011 both visits sponsored by FAPESP - procs. 2007/04279-9 and 2011/10799-0). This year Professor Bechstedt will come to Brazil as invited speaker at The International Conference on Solid Films and Surfaces (ICSFS-17) and has accepted our invitation to work for a week with GMSN. Your visit will be essential to discuss the results obtained in the group for some two-dimensional materials for joint publication; in the properties of alloys, involving group-IV elements; in addition to establishing other research activities in common as a sequence of the collaboration, we also intend to draft a cooperative research project to be submitted to supporting agencies of research, establishing the methodology, the results to be obtained, the visits to be undertaken by professors of both groups, graduate students, given the fact that Prof. Bechstedt already expressed favorable to co-supervise students in our group. It is noteworthy, that the coming of Prof. Bechstetd also be useful to discuss the development and validation of the LDA-1/2method, developed in 2008 in our research group in collaboration with prof. Dr. Luiz Guimarães Ferreira (during the term of the already finished Young researcher project FAPESP: 2006/05858-0), for two-dimensional systems. (AU)
