Litter resources in areas of Atlantic domain in Southeast Brazil: association between ants' morphology and nest structure

Abstract

Tropical ant communities are often rich, especially in the litter. The availability of nests can contribute to the biodiversity of ant assemblages in this stratum of the Atlantic Forest. In this project we propose to analyze the association between nest structure and morphology of the worker ants who use fallen twigs in the litter aiming at expanding the biological knowledge about the species looking for this resource. Hypotheses related to the nest and colonies structures, ants' morphology and other variables related to resource availability in the litter will be tested. The sampling will be conducted between the dry and rainy seasons in nine sites belonging to the Atlantic Domain from southeastern Brazil; the collecting localities have different forms of land use. Thirty plots (4 m2 each) will be demarcated and all twigs present will be manually collected and placed in individual plastic bags. The proposed morphological parameters are related to the ant biology. Twigs colonized or not, will have their structure analyzed. (AU)
