Influence of the sea breeze circulation on the development of the PBL and implications to the air quality at the MRSP

Abstract

The Planetary Boundary Layer (PBL) is the atmospheric layer nearest to the surface and, therefore, pollutant concentrations at this layer determine the air quality of a region. Several factors, both physical (topography and land coverage) and meteorological (wind, air humidity and temperature), contribute to the development of the atmospheric circulation at this layer, consequently affecting the spatial distribution and the time evolution of pollutant concentrations. Despite the studies already performed on the sea breeze in São Paulo, they have not eliminated the questions about its influence on the PBL development and the air quality of the region. This project aims to study the influence of the sea breeze circulation on the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo (MRSP) PBL development and to contribute to the knowledge concerning the concentration, transport and dispersion of pollutants in this region. A numerical study will be performed, using the Weather Research and Forecast (WRF) atmospheric model to investigate the PBL characteristics and the atmospheric circulation, and the Community Multiscale Air Quality model (CMAQ) to study pollutant concentration evolution. The project is intended to provide a better knowledge of the physical and meteorological factors that determine the spatial distribution and time evolution of pollutant concentrations at the MRSP.
