Abstract

The project aims to execute searching, indexing, reading and analysis of reviews, news and articles about the decadentism-symbolism in Brazilian journals from 1890 to 1892, when it appeared in Portugal a true flowering of innovative works: Oaristos by Eugenio de Castro and Azul by António de Oliveira Soares, both of 1890; Horas by Eugénio de Castro, Exame de consciência by Oliveira Soares, Poesias by Alberto d'Oliveira, Flor de pântano by José de Lacerda and Alma póstuma by D. João de Castro, all of 1891, and ultimately O livro de Aglaïs by Júlio Brandão, Só by António Nobre, Gouaches by João Barreira, Paraíso perdido by António de Oliveira Soares, Os simples by Guerra Junqueiro and Tristia by Antero de Figueiredo, published in 1892. There is strong evidence that these works caused significant impact and intense debate in the period preceding the publication of Missal and Broquéis, works of Cruz e Sousa who inaugurated the Brazilian symbolism in 1893. One aims, through this research, to complement investigation executed from March 2010 to February 2013 on the impact caused by the cited Cruz e Sousa's books on Brazilian press. From the knowledge acquired, one can think that the critical appreciation of these works by contemporaries was made through the concepts broadcasted by decadent-symbolist works by Portuguese poets and its critical reception.
