Abstract

The objective of this project is the fabrication and characterization of thin films organic solar cells. The basic steps for the investigation of this type of device include a sequence of different activities, but complementary: films preparation, structural characterization, preparation of the devices: electrical and optical characterization. Within this context, the project aims to make a detailed study of different properties which are critical to the production of organic solar cells (morphology of the films, interface effects, etc.) These properties are crucial for the development of more efficient organic solar cells, ie, the project has the intention to optimize the conversion of solar energy into electricity in these devices. For this, we intend to use different materials in the form of thin films fabricated by different deposition techniques (spin-coating and Langmuir-Blodgett). These films will be active layers of our organic devices. The thin films produced will be characterized by spectroscopic measurements (UV-vis, Raman, FTIR, etc.) and microscopy (AFM, SEM, etc.). These characterizations give information about the quality, uniformity and morphology of the films. These films are used in the fabrication of devices and electrically characterized (ac and dc measurements) giving emphasis on the study of the interface properties and the study of the mechanisms of transport, injection and separation of carriers within the device. Through these studies, we hope to have tools for the production of more efficient solar cells that are electrically characterized (measured dc) and evaluated from the study of photovoltaic parameters.
