Abstract

In a study published in 2004, Sumida et al. (2004) recognized the existence of circular depressions on the seafloor, which were interpreted as pockmarks. The presence of deep-sea corals and associated fauna was related with these features which, according to the authors reached diameters as wide as 1 km and depths as big as 100 meters below the adjacent topography. In a multibeam survey, conducted in 2011 on board the Navy's Research Vessel Sirius, the same area was partially surveyed and close to a thousand pockmark-like and other depressed features were recognized. Density and size of the depressions seem to be related to water depth - the smaller and more frequent being located in shallower areas (about 400 meters bmsl) and the bigger ones being located from the 600 meter isobaths and deeper. Some of these depressions reach diameters as large as 1.3 km and depths of tens of meters. (AU)
