Project and construction of a digital spectrometer:A more eficient equipment to investigate materials using PAC technique


A digital spectrometer with six LaBr3 detectors will be constructed for the Perturbed Gamma-Gamma Angular Correlation (PAC) spectroscopy measurements in the Hyperfine Interaction Laboratory at IPEN. The digital spectrometer will have complete versatility to measure PAC spectra in a wide range of temperatures (10K-1300 K) with good efficiency and time resolution so that the spectrometer could be used for measurements with short lived nuclear probes in the study of biomolecules and magnetic nanoparticles with applications in biomedical sciences and solid state physics. Principal motivation for the construction of digital spectrometer is its better performance in terms of time resolution and efficiency in data acquisition. The other motivation is to develop the digital technology for nuclear measurements in our laboratory with the possibility of acquiring more experience in this technology, which is much more simple and efficient than the analog technology. The experience in the use of digital technology for nuclear radiation measurement will be quite important for the training of scientists and technicians as Brasil is constructing a new multipurpose nuclear Research Reactor (RMB) and will require this type of technology for the future research with nuclear radiation. The new digital spectrometer to be constructed at IPEN will use digitizers of CAEN (model DT5751) which can work with 2 or 4 channels with 2GS/s or 1GS/s respectively, each with a resolution of 10 bits connected to one FPGA module (Altera Cyclone EP3C16) for 2 channels. The CAEN digitizer has a USB connection and an optical link with a data transfer rate of up to 80MB/s which permits connection with a control unit (model A2818) for controlling up to 8 digitizers. The digital spectrometer will use 3 digitizers, each coupled to 2 detectors, and interconnected to control unit which in turn will be connected to only one computer. All these elements will be housed in one rack to make the spectrometer as compact as possible. The software for the control of the spectrometer will be developed in language C in Linux platform and integrated to the software for the control of the external devices for heating and cooling the samples. Finally it should be emphasized that the total cost of all the equipment needed for the digital spectrometer will be considerably lower than for the normal analog spectrometer which uses a complex system of NIM electronic modules for the processing of detector signals.
