Abstract

Heavy metal pollution has been one of the main problems current, considering their toxicity, persistence in environment and bioaccumulation. Mangrove ecosystems are often exposed to these pollutants, being iron one of the metals in higher concentrations in sediment. We will investigate the bioaccumulation, distribution and elimination of iron in Avicennia schaueriana Stapf & Leechm. ex Modenke and Laguncularia racemosa (L.) C.F. Gaertn. under different iron concentrations. There are no publications on the anatomical and ultrastructural responses of mangrove plant species to iron, either a study integrated on the distribution of that element over the plant tissues, or even where possible barriers to their translocation. Furthermore, functional evaluation of the role of salt glands in leaves of A. schaueriana and L. racemosa in removing iron opens a new perspective of study which deserves to be further investigated, because traditionally, these structures have been described only as adaptations to high salt concentration in sediment.Once we will raise information on the iron accumulation in these plants, the results may reveal the potential use of mangrove plant in treatment of urban wastewater.
