Abstract

The immune response of the host against infection by rabies virus is determinant to direct the course and clinical manifestations of the disease. Many works have been developed in experimental models in this respect; however, studies involving human samples are still rare in literature. The cellular immune response plays a vital role contributing to the activation of the humoral response in order to produce specific antibodies against the rabies virus, which effectively would be an attempt by the immune system to ensure the survival of the host. Viral strains present in different species of mammals could target profiles of immune responses also differ according to the virulence of the lineage or by factors inherent to the infected animal's bite and the amount of viral load inserted the bite. The deeper understanding of how the host's immune system reacts to infection by rabies virus would certainly elucidate aspects that contribute to the development of new therapies. This project aims to study by immunohistochemistry in fragments of the central nervous system of patients who died due to rabies infection, the inflammatory process triggered by rabies virus transmitted by dog bite by characterizing the phenotype of the cells and the cytokines produced besides mechanisms of neuronal death.
