Indirect dark matter search with the AMS-02 detector

Abstract

Between the most fascinating subjects in modern physics, the search for primordial antimatter as well as the understanding of the nature of dark matter (DM) can be explored by detecting cosmic rays. If DM is made of Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs), charged and neutral particles are expected as a consequence of their annihilation. DM signatures could be found in the secondary- to-primary ratios, as the positron fraction, as well as in the fluxes of the leptonic and hadronic component of cosmic rays: while astrophysical sources show power-law spectra, DM spectra would show a steep cutoff at the DM particle mass. The present research statement proposes the creation of a research group at the Instituto de Física de São Carlos (IFSC-USP) that will be focused on the search for dark matter in cosmic rays. This application opens the possibility for IFSC-USP to be the first Institution in South America to join the AMS-02 Collaboration, that has designed and built a particle physics magnetic spectrometer operating in outer space since three years. The main activity of the group will be the analysis of the data collected by the AMS detector. Using leading-edge computer algorithms, the proposed team will provide original contributions concerning the particle identification and noise reduction. In parallel, the interpretation of AMS results will be carried out, aiming at performing DM studies in extensions of the Standard Model. A computer cluster will be set up in order to reach the described goals. (AU)
