Abstract

Chronic periodontitis is a complex disease involving the interaction between infecting microorganisms and the host´s immune/inflammatory response. Genetic factors can modulate the host´s ability to cope with the bacterial challenge tipping the balance towards a resistant or susceptible phenotype, characterized by the occurrence and extent of irreversible tooth attachment loss. Nevertheless, genetic research investigating susceptibility traits in candidate genes related to immune response had been contradictory and inconclusive. On the other hand, recent genome wide association studies had identified a series of single nucleotide polymorphisms related to increased risk of suffering subgingival infection from putative periodontal pathogens, providing a link between the infection pattern and host´s susceptibility to disease. Therefore, we propose to investigate the influence of the SNP associated to periodonto-pathogenic infection with the subgingival colonization pattern, clinical disease parameters and immune/inflammatory markers in a sample population of subjects characterized as resistant to chronic periodontitis, susceptible to the disease, and controls; in both cross-sectional and prospective cohorts. This approach will provide further insight into the interlinked mechanisms of disease pathogenesis and could contribute to the development of new and more efficient therapeutic strategies. (AU)
