Increasing the network speed in IEL's computer labs Access Points

Abstract

Research in the area of linguistics and language studies relies increasingly on online digital content such as audio recordings, video streaming or written documents. Because of recent technological advances, the quality of this digital media has been improved continuously in terms of resolution, which, however, has resulted in the need to transport exponentially heavier files. Thus, with the improvement in quality comes the need for higher network speed in order for the content to be accessed. To invest in the improvement of the network infrastructure, in order to provide broader access bandwidth, is, therefore, essential to keeping the momentum of scientific research into linguistics and language studies. The computer labs are the main infrastructures to support research in IEL and they have received investment on a continuous basis in order to cope with the current and future demands of the Institute's research community. Currently, thanks to the investments made over the past few years, these labs are equipped with the latest generation personal computers. Last year, in addition, the institute invested in the acquisition of a network storage system for storing digitized content conveniently. In order to achieve the results expected from all the aforementioned investments, it is now essential that IEL's data network be also improved. (AU)
