Abstract
Studies on amphibian acoustic communication can have different approaches. Traditionally such sturdies concentrate on advertisement call descriptions, the study of intraspecific reproductive or aggressive interactions, or on using bioacoustical characters as diagnostic for new taxa descriptions. However, many different approaches could be given to the fields of bioacoustics or other communication systems in anurans. Therefore, we put together five projects that focus on non-traditional studies of anuran communication and sensory systems (also generally neglected). Such studies focus on i) distress calls functions, ii) hearing pathways in earless toads, iii) mute frogs communication, iv) micro and macro anuran advertisement call evolution, and v) on the understanding of the causes of blindness of an introduced domestic species. All projects will be centered at Unicamp and coordinated by the principal investigator of this grant proposal. Both associated laboratories have the basic infrastructure and half of the team is already granted with fellowships. Thus, assuring high chances of these projects to be well succeeded. In the end, we hope to fill some important gaps in the field of anuran communication, with behavioral evolution as an underlying discipline and the Atlantic forest as a reference biome. (AU)
