Abstract

Excess of weight in adolescence is a major concern in the world today. There is growing evidence that an appropriate intervention requires not only an approach that leads to the modification of eating habits, but assists in the quality of life. There is a lack of studies that have monitored for more than six months adolescents with excess of weight according to a multidisciplinary treatment. The hypothesis underlying this study is that a multidisciplinary treatment can lead to the normalization of weight in adolescents with overweight. The aim of the study is therefore to investigate the effectiveness of a multidisciplinary intervention to treat adolescents with excess of weight at the Center for Recovery and Nutritional Education lasting eighteen months. Two groups of adolescents (> 1 and d 3 Z score of BMI-for-age) will be studied: an experimental group (n = 100) and a control group (n = 100). The intervention of the experimental group will consist of: participation in workshops (18 months); and individual monitoring of clinical condition (baseline, after 6 and 18 months of follow up), nutritional and psychological counseling (12 months), and physical activity (6 months). The content of the workshops will include nutritional education, physical activity, therapeutic and integrative group activities aiming to encourage them to be propagators in their environment of the healthy lifestyle taught. The experimental group will respond to the general algorithm of the Transtheoretical Model for dietary and physical activity changes every six months and will receive intervention according to their stage of change. The control group will receive nutritional (monthly) and clinical (bi-monthly) consultations. (AU)
