A multicultural project to investigate the relationship between obesity, physical activity, and low back pain

Abstract

Nearly 4 million people in Australia and 12 million in Brazil suffer from back pain which is considered a major problem in older people. Obesity is pandemic and a growing public concern while physical activity is a potential therapeutic strategy to manage both back pain and obesity. These conditions are health priorities for health policy and implementation in Brazil and Australia. The impact and academic quality of these projects, which have been recognized by the funding bodies FAPESP and the Spanish Murcia Foundation, will be substantial and results will inform the public and policy makers on the types and dosages of physical activity that are protective for obesity and back pain. In turn, this initiative will provide a strategic path for the future collaborations of the University of Sydney and UNESP in Brazil. This proposal is innovative because it will allow the cross fertilization of knowledge between the two research groups through the conjoint engagement of both researchers in the two research projects. Dr Paulo Ferreira's expertise in epidemiological research in back pain and physical activity, particularly with the use of the twin design and genetic analysis, will be crucial for data analysis of Dr Fabio Lira's research project examining the role of physical activity in obesity. Dr Fabio Lira's expertise in obesity measures will be useful in the research led by Dr Ferreira examining the role of obesity in the development of back pain. This proposal will allow the implementation of research workshops in at USYD and UNESP, where these research topics will be discussed and presented to other academics and research students. (AU)
