Vortex strings in supersymmetric field theories

Abstract

The work of Prof. Yung is at the intersection of QCD, supersymmetry and string theory. The main subject of his study is confinement, more precisely the question: what can we learn about the phenomenon of confinement from studying the dynamics of supersymmetric theories? In spite of the great progress in the past following the work of Seiberg and Witten, there is still a lot to be understood. In particular, the role of solitonic strings (a.k.a. vortex, or Abrikosov-Nielsen-Olesen strings). Alexey Yung is one of the inventors of the non-abelian vortex strings, which are of crucial importance. He is the author of the book on this subject. The plan is that he comes to visit and gives a course about supersymmetric solitons, based on his book. Also, he will participate in collaborations. Most importantly, it seems that some of those nonabelian strings are plausible candidates for describing some fundamental (as opposed to solitonic) strings. This is the point of contact with the research of the IFT group, and hopefully will result in interesting collaboration. (AU)
