Effect of annealing after grinding on different systems of Y-TZP zirconia

Abstract

The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of annealing after grinding on the surface properties, crystalline phases and on the flexural strength of two different zirconia Y-TZP (yttria partially stabilized tetragonal polycrystalline zirconia) systems. Y-TZP bars for core (Group Z) and for full contour (monolithic, Group MZ) will be distributed in 6 subgroups (n = 18) according to the performance (+) or not (-) of grinding (G), irrigation (I) and annealing (A) as follow: G-A- (control) and G-A+ (20 X 4 X 1.2mm); and G+I-A-, G+I-A+, G+I+A- and G+I+A+ (20 X 4 X 1.5mm). The grinding (0.3 mm) will be done in standardizing device using MasterCeram diamond stone wheel-shaped at low speed. The annealing of A+ groups will be conducted according to pilot study. In group Z, the zirconia core will be veneered with IPS e-max Ceram (1.8 mm thick) using ZirLiner, wash, two layers of dentin and glaze with the firing parameters recommended by the manufacturer. Topographic surface, free surface energy and mean roughness will be evaluated for determine the surface properties. X-ray diffraction technique will be used to assess the amount and type of crystalline phases. Samples will be subjected to 4 point- bending test in a MTS 810 machine (10 kN, 0.5 mm/min). The data will be compared by statistical analysis according to the most appropriate test adopting a significance level of 5%. (AU)
