Abstract

Several studies indicate surface treatments on the zirconia surface to improve bonding with the ceramic veneer. Among them, the Plasma Enhanced Vapor Deposition (PECVD) assisted by ionic bombardment stands out since it has been effective in modifying the chemical and physical properties of biomaterials. Despite the promising effects on the ceramic systems, no study evaluated the association of PECVD treatment with airborne-abrasion and liner application in improving the bond strength between zirconia and a glass ceramic. Thus, this study aims to evaluate the degradation of deposited PECVD film and to verify the effectiveness of this treatment, comparing with other zirconia surface treatments, through the analysis of film degradation, the phase transformation of the zirconia and the bond strength after the association of different surface treatments and aging. Thirty zirconia rectangular samples will be made for evaluation of degradation, being evaluated hourly in a period of 24 hours, through the analysis of contact angle, roughness and film thickness. The analysis will also be performed before and after the simulation of ceramic veneer cooking in a ceramic furnace. For the bond strength step, 294 zirconia samples will be made, which will receive different surface treatments: 1) control (without treatment); 2) airborne-abrasion 27 um; 3) liner; 4) PECVD; 5) airborne + liner; 6) airborne + PECVD, 7. PECVD + liner. Surface characterization after the treatments (SEM/EDS, AFM, SE, roughness) and, later, the bond strength after different aging media (control, hydrothermal aging and thermal fatigue) will be performed. For analysis of the phase transformation, an x-ray diffractometer will be used after each surface treatment. Quantitative data will be submitted to the test of adherence to the normal curve, and the appropriate statistical test will be applied. In addition, a systematic review will be performed according to the PRISMA criteria to evaluate if the plasma treatment promotes an improvement in bond strength between zirconia and ceramic veneer. In this way, this study aims to prove the efficacy of the PECVD treatment, and to propose protocols for treatment, storage and application of the ceramic veneer after the deposition of the PECVD film.
