In the equine species, osteochondrosis and osteoarthrosis are among the main articular disorders; they disturb articular cartilage homeostasis, and therefore lessen the likelihood of tissue repair. In this scenario, full knowledge of inflammatory and degenerative events affecting joint cartilage is vital for the development of an adequate therapeutic approach, to refrain diseases´ progression and to establish a correct prognosis. It is not known, so far, which form of treatment suits best a particular stage of a disease process during arthroscopy, as well as a more accurate prognosis regarding the athletic life of the animals. In face of these facts, the main goal of the present study is to harvest material from osteochondritic and osteoarthritic equine joints, namely synovial membrane and synovial fluid, to create a grading system for these articular disorders, in order to establish a pattern related to the disease severity, as well as references that can direct the best treatment outcome. Synovial membrane specimens will be obtained during arthroscopic surgery and will be evaluated macroscopically and histopatologically. Inflammatory biomarkers will also be studied in synovial membrane as well as in synovial fluid. (AU)
