Runtime reconfiguration techniques analysis applied to embedded systems using reconfigurable processor

Abstract

Embedded systems are defined as computer systems with high hardware and software coupling designed to perform dedicated functions. They are present in various application domains, i.e., automotive, aeronautical, space, and telecommunications. Basically, there are four requirements that guide the embedded systems development: (i) performance, (ii) power consumption, (iii) size, and (iv) price. Nowadays, one may note an increasing demand for high performance and low power consumption applications considering the embedded systems area. Therefore, it is needed to adopt new approaches for the embedded systems design, such as the adaptivity. That is possible through the use of reconfigurable processors, which are an alternative to other solutions (i.e., processors or ASICs). There are some key points to support the employ of reconfigurable processors in the embedded systems design: performance vs. power consumption; increasing of production costs and non-recurring engineering costs; and smart devices popularity. Thus, this research project goal is to analyze reconfiguration techniques applied to embedded systems using reconfigurable processor, aiming to propose a runtime reconfiguration model that considers the performance and power consumption optimization. The use of runtime reconfiguration techniques on embedded systems, through the reconfigurable processors utilization, has showed itself as an active and promising research field. Summarizing, the proposed model application opens up the possibility to runtime system assessment and decision making to implement and accomplish a given functionality in an optimized way. (AU)
