La Promenade Vernet, by Diderot: translate and notes, followed by a critical apparatus (introduction and glossary)

Abstract

This project proposes a full translation of a small text by Denis Diderot (1713-1784), entitled La Promenade Vernet. It is a fragment of about sixty pages, contained in one of Diderot's Salons, that on the exhibition of paintings held in 1767 in the Salon Carré of the Louvre Museum. The Promenade Vernet deals with one of the predilection of painters Diderot, Joseph Vernet, landscape author of magnificent marinas and urban scenes. It's a pretty long stretch considering and has an undeniable unity, so much that can be read and reviewed independently. Moreover, it is endowed with exceptional literary qualities and a great philosophical and aesthetic interest, which justifies that is translated into Portuguese, which does not have translations. La Promenade Vernet will interest both to literary theory scholars as those dealing with philosophy (aesthetics), or those who pore over the history of art criticism. (AU)
