Abstract

Nowadays, different bioanalytical chemistry strategies have been employed in order to investigate potential biomarkers based on experimental information that allow to observe modifications on the biomolecular profile of an organism generated by a biological stimulus (illness, environmental contamination, genetic manipulation, etc.). Amongst these strategies, metabolomics, which consists in the global study of secondary metabolites (including lipids) in an organism, is one of the most recently developed and whose application in the study of psychiatric diseases is still scarce.Bipolar disorder is a chronic and severe psychiatric illness, characterized by mood oscillations. Its pathophysiology is still not well established, however, it is known that lipid metabolism is affected in the presence of this disease. Therefore, the study of lipids involved in this disease is an important question in biomarkers discovery, as well as in the comprehension of the molecular bases of bipolar disorder.In the present work, a systematic evaluation of the lipids contained in serum samples from bipolar disorder patients and healthy individuals is proposed, in order to identify potential bipolar disorder biomarkers. To that purpose, lipidomics strategy will be employed to characterize the set of lipids contained in serum samples by liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry, and then the differential lipids will be designated by multivariate statistics tools. Briefly, this project presents an innovative proposal, where a state-of-the-art analytical methodology should be applied in studies that fit in the systems biology paradigm. (AU)
