Abstract

In this project, the synthesis of calcium orthophosphate nanoparticles functionalized with ethylene glycol dimethacrylate derivatives (EGDMA, DEGDMA, TEGDMA and TETDMA) will be investigated with the purpose of obtaining particles with low agglomeration and chemical interaction with dimethacrylate-based resin matrices. The ultimate goal is the development of resin composites associating mechanical properties compatible with their potential clinical applications and bioactivity (through calcium and phosphate ion release). The project is divided in three phases. In phase 1, functionalized dicalcium phosphate dihydrate (DCPD) powders will be synthesized and characterized regarding the presence of the functionalized agent, surface area, size and morphology. In the second phase, the powders displaying the desirable characteristics in terms of size and functionalization will be incorporated in a resin matrix and the resulting materials will be tested for mechanical properties, ion release and microstructure. Finally, in phase 3, the powders showing the best behavior in the previous phase will be tested in formulations including silanated Barium glass particles, and evaluated according to the same methods used in phase 2.
