Study and equipment development in transmittance meters for window tinting and films

Abstract

Window tint films are widely used in Brazil to reduce solar radiation and aesthetics. However, many articles have shown that the use of these films without proper certification may increase the incidence of traffic crashes. Brazil adopted a resolution for window films, but it is not yet effective. There is only one commercial equipment for this measurement, with an outdated technology and at a cost that limits the police efficiency. The measurement of luminous transmittance and ultraviolet protection, are important tests of the Brazilian and international standards. This project will concerns the development of an equipment to measure the films in the visible and UV region of the electromagnetic spectrum 315-780 nm, with an optical system and an electronic instrumentation module. We expect an equipment to measure quality and light transmittance in filters, that will be assessed by spectrophotometric measurements and the current meter. Different lighting sources and sensors will be evaluated, with the methodology of spectral approximation, and tests will be done with colorimetric techniques with a three-channel sensor. The equipment will present a report based on the standard and evaluate positively or negatively for each car window. With the expectation of a market that moves million in business in thousands of establishments that sell optical films, classification and qualification of films shows a need for competitiveness, scientific explanations and a great market potential.
