Airline emission charges: an econometric model to investigate their potential effects on the Brazilian air transport industry

Abstract

This project intends to develop an empirical framework to investigate the impacts of schemes of airline greenhouse gases emissions charges on key market indicators of the Brazilian air transport industry. We focus on the effects on airfares and air travel demand. We aim at examining these impacts by developing simulated scenarios in which increases in the effective price of jetfuel are inserted by the aviation authorities. We will derive cost-price transmission and air travel demand equations by estimating econometric models utilizing panel data disaggregated by the carrier-route-time level. The main research objective is to produce some environmental policy recommendations for the airline industry based on the empirical evidence generated and on the price and demand elasticities estimated.
