Determinants of adoption of integrated production system at livestock farm level in the State of São Paulo

Abstract

The percentage of natural pastures and degraded pastures is high. Census data show that almost half of the São Paulo state's pasture area is in this situation, which incurs low productivity and negative environmental aspects in the livestock sector. The adoption of production systems integrating livestock, crop and/or forest is an alternative to revert this situation. However, the adoption has been limited and heterogeneous. Among the several possible arrangements for the recovery and/or renovation of pastures, the crop-livestock integration systems has been diffused rapidly. While the production systems integrating the forest component still are in early stages of adoption and require studies to foster the adoption. This project aims to identify the determinants of adoption of integrated production systems at farm level in the state of São Paulo. The literature on technology adoption will provide the theoretical approach to understanding the farmer behavior and decision making toward this innovation. A structured questionnaire will be used to obtain information on characteristics of the farm, the production system and the farmer. A sample of 70 beef cattle farms will provide data to test hypotheses by using a Logit model. The results apply for formulation of public policies and private strategies that aim to increase the diffusion of integrated production systems and the intensity of the recovery of pastures in the state of São Paulo in order to improve productivity and sustainability of livestock.
