Abstract

We propose a Visiting Professor appointment for Prof. Dr. John Christopher Brown at UNICAMP-Campinas, in coordination with research partners at FEAGRI (School of Agricultural Engineering), NEPAM (Center of Environmental Studies), NIPE (Center of Energy Planning) and IG (Institute of Geosciences). This appointment would provide Dr. Brown with the opportunity to contribute his expertise in building a team of professors and graduate students with the skills to pursue interdisciplinary research on the human and environmental dynamics of biofuel production, climate change, and other related topics.Dr. Brown's work will support the following projects: FAPESP 2014/26767-9. He will co-supervise the thesis of Maria Angélica Petrini and other students who are working to incorporate data from satellite remote sensing and social-science/humanities-oriented work with human subjects in studies involving human-environmental dynamics. He will also offer a course, entitled "Political ecology and land change science," designed to provide participating students and faculty with a conceptual basis for incorporating social science/humanities-oriented methods in studies of land-use/land-cover change, and vice-versa. The course will give students the opportunity to read and discuss examples of this type of research in English and to produce a series of products appropriate to each student's stage in their research (e.g. literature reviews, proposals, thesis/dissertation chapters, research articles for publication, etc.). Dr. Brown will also contribute toward the development of new research proposals to be submitted to US and Brazilian funding agencies, such as the Geography and Spatial Sciences or the Coupled Human and Natural Systems Programs at the National Science Foundation, and FAPESP.Dr. Brown will also continue to help build links with research partners at Embrapa Informática, especially Drs. Alexandre Coutinho and Júlio Esquerdo, who deal with the production and management of land-use/land-cover datasets, especially as they relate to agricultural development. (AU)
