Abstract

This work plan belongs to a FAPESP (São Paulo Research Foundation) thematic project "Global Sustainable Bioenergy initiative - Geospatial and environmental analysis of pasture intensification for bioenergy", process N° 2014/26767-9, and three topics are addressed: (1) Pasture land use and intensification; (2) Sustainability of pasture intensification and modelling of bioenergy crops; and (3) Geospatial analysis and remote sensing. The activities scheduled herein are related to the first topic, Task 2 - "Impact of soil, seasonal variability of precipitation, and climate change on pasture performance gap using climate binning". We are defining the framework based on climate 'space' where the main plant-growth drivers: growing degree-days (GDD) and precipitation (TAP), allows to determine the yield gap and intensification potential for basically meat and milk production from ruminants across the world. In this project, the follow goals are addressed: (1) to visit the Swedish University of Agricultural Science (SLU), in Sweden, aiming to be in touch with an high-level international researchers involved with modelling and pasture system issues; (2) include soil characteristics (for instance soil type, texture, organic carbon) on the binning method for a more appropriated yield gap analysis; (3) assess the impact of climate change scenarios on pasture intensification in many parts of the world, based on the yield gap assessment; and (4) to writing a manuscript aiming to get one more paper at least submitted during the internship period in a impactful interdisciplinary journal, in order to spread the results obtained by this project core.
