Abstract

Algae are critical for the structure and functioning of marine ecosystems and global climate cycles. They are responsible for nearly half of the net primary productivity that takes place on the planet, playing a central role in ecosystem functioning and have major impacts on long-term climate trends. Algae also provide compounds that are used as food additives and in pharmaceutical and microbiological applications, an industry estimated to be worth US$6 billion annually. Despite the global significance of algae, there remain significant gaps in the knowledge of the genomic features that underlie their important roles as well as the evolution of those genomes. This project aims to bring together two leading laboratories in the field of algal evolutionary genomics. Through collaboration an innovative project, we will be answering significant questions in algal comparative and evolutionary genomics. The project reflects the shared interests and expertise between the groups and aims to stimulate research output, exchange of skills, and continued funding. The project consists of a workshop, exchange of postgrad students, and the generation of pilot data to be used in joint funding bids. (AU)
