E-health and physical activity in back pain: a proposal to consolidate and expand the cooperation between the University of Sidney and University of State of São Paulo

Abstract

The main aim of this proposal is to consolidate and expand research cooperation between the University of Sydney and the São Paulo State University by bringing the expertise of high calibre researchers in the field of Genetics, physical activity, and low back pain. Dr Paulo Ferreira and Dr Milena Simic from the University of Sydney are experts in the field of genetics and the use of technology to assess physical activity. They have a current research project to investigate the impact of an e-health intervention to reduce care-seeking (e.g. surgery and medication) in patients with chronic low back pain. Dr Rafael Zambelli Pinto and Dr Carlos Marcelo Pastre from the São Paulo State University are researchers with expertise in the field of low back pain and musculoskeletal conditions. They have a current research project to investigate the impact of physical activity in back pain. The expertise of both teams will be brought together and linked to collaborate on these innovative projects. Learning and research activities in the form of workshops will be organized when the unique, but complementary, expertise of each team will be presented and used for the design, analysis, and manuscript production arising from the implementation of the funded research projects. These activities will result in the integration of other staff and students from the institutions, the discussion and implementation of future projects and the exchange of academics and research students between the two institutions.
