Abstract

Five to 10% of the bone fractures do not regenerate properly, resulting indelayed union or nonunion and causing physical disability or incapacity of the affectedperson. This fact highlights the importance of studying therapeutic methods foraccelerating bone healing like stimulation by low-intensity pulsed ultrasound andelectromagnetic field. The study of biomechanical and biomolecular aspects of thesemethods will be developed in two steps: in vivo detection of expression and activationof FAK, ERK-1/2, Akt e IRS-1 from rat tibias (intact and with an artificial defect)stimulated by the cited therapeutic methods and in vivo biomechanical evaluation, bymeans of a specially developed intentation test and a tension test, of the boneconsolidation within rat bone defects stimulated by the cited methods. We intend toexamine the correlation between the proteins and the bone strength and, based on thefindings, to determine the advantages and disadvantages of each stimulation method,targeting their clinical application.
