Papain oral products for intestinal treatment evaluation using triple co-culture of Caco-2, HT29-MTX and Raji cells as an in vitro model

Abstract

Currently the production of medicines containing enzymes have been promising due to the magnitude of their therapeutic potential. Papain is a proteolytic enzyme isolated from the latex of leaves and green fruit of papaya (Carica papaya Linnaeus) widely used as a debridant agent in the processes of healing and treatment of wounds mainly due to its ability to promote tissue growth in addition to being employed as a promoter of oral and dermal absorption. Although widely used in topical formulations, papain is little explored in oral use formulations for the treatment of intestinal diseases. The development of new medicinal products for oral use, the tests that evaluate the permeability and the toxicity of drugs throughout the gastrointestinal tract are very important, however, for bioethical issues, it is necessary to reduce the use of animals in the framework of scientific research for this purpose. This project will evaluate the permeability of oral use formulations containing papain to intestinal pathologies treatment using in vitro models of co-cultures of Caco-2 cells, HT29-MTX and Raji cells. The results will be disseminated and should contribute in an innovative way with scientific research and development. (AU)
