Abstract

Plants can respond to environmental changes in the long-term by genetic changes and short-term via morphological, anatomical, physiological and biochemical changes. The morphological and anatomical features are reliable indicators for the study and understanding of the physiological processes and ecological adaptations by plants. Environmental variations influence the seasonal behavior of the cambium and, as a consequence, the characteristics of vascular tissues produced, besides the characteristics of protective tissues. With this proposal we intend to investigate the cambial activity and anatomical characteristics of the vascular and protective tissues of the stem in species that occur in different ecosystems. We divided this proposal in three different subprojects: 1. Cambial activity; 2. Anatomy of secondary vascular tissues of stems and roots; 3. Comparative bark studies in aereal and underground organs. The knowledge generated by this research will help in understanding the growth dynamics of the species, the anatomical adaptive strategies of the species in different ecosystems, and functional patterns of bark on aerial and underground organs of Cerrado species.
