BeefTrader: a market smart information platform to maximize profit of livestock producers and meat industry

Abstract

Brazil is the leading exporter of meat, being responsible for 21% of the international market. It is possible that this market share will increase by 50% within the next few decades. Improving profitability among producers and the industry may enhance production and meat quality, and thus help Brazil to meet this global demand. For now, producers and the meat industry do not have mechanisms to support transactions between them in a way that this is mutually beneficial. To change this scenario it is necessary to go over or to cope with some challenges: i) rapidly and safely negotiating animals between producers and industry requires knowledge of how business between these actors performs; ii) consider logistic restrictions for animal transport and distribution between producers and industry, or between industry and the final customer; iii) quantify variability of carcass and meat quality and production from animals slaughtered in a commercial plant and marketed at their optimal economical endpoint (the most profitable day to slaughter while in the fattening period). These challenges become opportunities in this project, which aims at gathering data and build computational models to develop a market smart information platform (BeefTrader). This innovation will help producers and the meat industry to maximize their profitability. (AU)
