Abstract

The anaerobic digestion of paper and cellulose industry can facilitate the sustainable development of energy supply by reducing the emissions of greenhouse gases as well minoring the disposal effects observed in the environment. The biogas obtained through biodigestion processes provides a versatile strategy for renewable energy generation, since the methane can be used to replace fossil fuels as well as offers an alternative source for electricity generation by the use of conversion engines. The generation of biogas from waste from the paper industry becomes an interesting approach, as the volume generated in this sector is considerably high and presents a determined COD. Furthermore, production of biogas has been studied in order to improve the knowledge of the microbiological systems involved in the process, trying to select microorganisms to be used as inoculum in biogas production steps. Thus, this project aims to assess the methanogenic potential, performance and stability of the waste biodigestion. It is also expected to achieve the necessary knowledge of the microbial population for the design of a biogas reactor in a pilot scale and corresponding intellectual property. (AU)
