Beverage aluminum cans: influence of acid, catalytic ions and ingredients on the corrosion process

Abstract

Aluminum can corrosion is a problem of huge economic, environmental and food safety relevance for the beverage industry and it occurs during storage, handling and transportation. Nevertheless, there are few works in literature concerning its evaluation and causes. It occurs majorly in packaging for aggressive products, such as the acidic beverages. In general, it occurs in a rapid and critical way over a great number of packs, resulting even in a huge financial impact for both packaging and beverage industry, in addition to the food, water and energy waste. Most of the corrosion studies in aluminum alloys evaluates the influence of chloride levels; however, they do not evaluate the aluminum alloys used for food packaging. The aim of this work is to study the corrosion phenomenon in two pieces aluminum cans intended to beverage contact. Other aims of this work is to identify the corrosion products formed on the metal surface, in order to understand the corrosion phenomenon and thus identify how to minimize this problem. In two steps, different solutions of catalytic ions (Cl-, Fe+2) will be studied, as the ingredients (anthocyanin and quinine) used to soft drink production, which may contribute to the corrosion problem. In the first moment, the system capability to promote the aluminum corrosion will be evaluated. Based on these results, the second step will evaluate the corrosion kinetic of the most critical solutions. At the project ends, it is expected that the results obtained allow a better understanding of the corrosion problem development in beverage aluminum cans, as to collaborate to the definition of safety parameters for manufacturing, packing, handling, transport and commercialization of the beverage.
