Abstract

The general objective of the project is to conduct collaborative research, at the leading edge of knowledge, in the field of carbon-based coatings by combining the areas of expertise of UoB and INPE. The specific objectives of the present proposal can be summarised as follows: 1) To study the introduction of alloying elements as dopants in carbon-based coatings using the active screen technology. 2) To study duplex surface treatments, consisting of an interlayer and a carbon-based coating produced by active screen / PECVD. 3) To train post-doctoral researchers and post-graduate research students at a high level. 4) To establish a new research collaboration between two leading research groups in the field of surface engineering, UoB and INPE. 5) To raise the international research profiles of UoB and INPE and attract an increasing level or resources. The combined expertise of the two groups is expected to open new paths to: Improve the interfacial properties between the substrate and the carbon-based coating by introducing an interlayer of a suitable material (Cu, Ni, Ag, Pt, Nb, etc.); and improve the properties of the carbon-based coating as a result of the optimised plasma conditions and the introduction of alloying elements (Cu, Ni, Ag, Pt, Nb, etc.). The research project is justified in view of the scientific interest and technological importance of carbon-based coatings, the existing expertise of the project partners and their potential for synergistic growth, and the context of increasing level of engagement in collaborative research between UK and Brazil.
