Abstract

This project concerns leak detection in plastic water distribution pipes, and is closely related to the FAPESP (PITE) project co-funded by SABESP (Processo 2013/50412-3). In this Sprint project, two specific pieces of work will be conducted. One will be to improve the fundamental understanding into the way in which a leak generates noise in a plastic pipe and the second will be to couple this to a vibro-acoustic model of the pipe. This will enable fundamental limits for leak detection ranges in plastic water distribution pipes to be determined. The theoretical aspects of this will be undertaken by the UNSW team and the experimental verification will be undertaken by the UNESP team. This fundamental work will feed into the later parts of the FAPESP project in which a second generator correlator will have an integral actuator incoporated to measure in-situ the wave speed related to leak noise. Additionally, it is intended that the research groups in UNESP and UNSW will forge a closer relationship which will enable them to apply for research grants in the future to tackle important vibro-acoustic problems that have relevance to both Brazil and Australia.
