Abstract

The clade Calyptrata in Diptera comprises 15 families and over 20,000 species, about 12% of the world Diptera diversity. The Calyptratae are divided into three superfamilies: Hippoboscoidea, Muscoidea and Oestroidea. The Neotropical diversity of the group comprises 5,000 species, 1/4 of world diversity. Although the monophyly is consistently corroborated, there are several problems to be cleared in Calyptrata, such as the superfamilies relationships, the monophyly of superfamilies, the families relationships, and monophyly of families, and these questions are very controversial within Diptera higher-level phylogeny. Moreover, there is a recurrent problem in the higher-level molecular phylogenies of Diptera ¯ for family level and all levels above ¯ that is the downsampling and misrepresentation of the Neotropical fauna. Articles published by authors from Northern Hemisphere include an average Neotropical sampling of 9%, while the authors from Southern Hemisphere include 48% (average) of Neotropical taxa in their phylogenies. The aim of this project is to perform a molecular phylogeny of Diptera Calyptrata based on molecular data obtained through PCR-amplified molecular markers (traditional or Sanger sequencing) and through large-scale sequencing (Next Generation Sequencing - NGS). In this project, there will be two innovative and impactful factors for the phylogenetic knowledge of Diptera and of Calyptrata, the first is the increment of Neotropical sampling (no phylogeny of Calyptrata have ever included a meaningful Neotropical sampling), and the second is the pioneering the large-scale sequencing (there is no phylogenetic study of Diptera using NGS published so far). This project involves a network composed of 15 researchers, 2 post-docs, 4 PhD students and 2 technicians, gathering 14 different Brazilian (9) and foreign (5) institutions. (AU)
