Abstract
Blastocystis spp. is a protozoan commonly found in stool samples, described as enteroparasite of humans and animals. This organism has a worldwide distribution with an increasing prevalence over the years, but remains surrounded by controversies about aspects such as pathogenicity and zoonotic character. Blastocystis spp. has been related as a possible etiologic agent of gastrointestinal and extraintestinal manifestations such as irritable bowel syndrome, as well as participation in the pathogenesis of chronic urticaria. There are few studies conducted in Brazil with the objective of molecular characterization of subtypes. In view of this, the study aims to identify the subtypes of Blastocytis spp. in stool samples from individuals of the Hospital das Clínicas of Sao Paulo (HC/FMUSP) and possibly understand the relationship of subtypes with chronic urticaria.
