Abstract

MMCs (Modular Multilevel Converter) have been studied in the last ten years, and were adopted by industry in applications such as renewable energy, direct current transmission systems (voltage source type), medium voltage drives, etc. However, there still are many aspects including its modeling, control strategies definitions and tuning, as well as the study of hardware implementation architectures which are relevant research subjects. This research project aims the development of a hardware implementation of a MMC system, consisting of a central processing board which includes a DSP (Digital Signal Processor) and a FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array), twenty-four power conversion modules and three measurement modules, all with local processing capability. Communication between modules and central processor is achieved by point to point high speed, synchronous digital links. The proposed system allows flexibility for topology changes, good noise immunity and optimization of measuring and control cabling. This platform can be applied not only for MMC studies but also for individual converters as well as other multilevel topologies and can be applied in higher power level systems, not limiting to laboratory prototypes. During this research development, the hardware platform will be shared by one PhD (control of MMCs) and two MSc students (one related to the study of arquitectures for the control system of MMCs and the other about the use of FPGAs for the control of power converters.
