Abstract

A co-crystal may be understood as the junction of two neutral components in a crystalline form in order to improve the solid state properties of pharmaceutical compounds, especially those related to water solubility. Different methodologies to obtain cocrystals can be found in the literature, and the crystallization from the melt, from solution and solvent-drop grinding are the most used ones.Rutin, an active pharmaceutical ingredient with potential applications in sunscreen and antioxidants creams, and which presents low water solubility, will be used as a standard to obtain different cocrystals using various solvents, co-former agents and crystallization techniques. In addition, ferulic acid, a potent phenolic antioxidant found in high concentrations in plants, and which has a high sunscreen potential will be used in conjunction with rutin in an attempt to obtain new cocrystals.The structural characterization of the formed compounds will be performed mainly with the use of X-ray powder diffraction. The data obtained using this experimental technique will then be used in the process of structural determination of the obtained samples, with the structures being refined using the Rietveld method.In this research project we will carry out the synthesis and characterization of cocrystals of rutin and ferulic acid, aiming the formation of new crystalline forms with potential applications in sunscreens and antioxidants creams.
