Abstract

Brazil is the holder of the largest share of world production of concentrated orange juice. In contrast to the high production directly impacts the citrus industry, as regards the generated quantity of wastewater to be treated in the treatment of implanted systems in industries. These treatment systems are mostly composed of biological units for specific removal of organic matter. These units do not reach the expected efficiencies widely depending on the biological activity inhibition by the presence of residual toxic compounds, such as d-Limonene (terpene) extracted from orange peel. In this context, the main objective of the research is to evaluate the d-limonene degradation for various concentrations in horizontal anaerobic fixed bed composed of inert supports for biomass immobilization. Subsequently, the microorganisms involved in the biological treatment process are identified from anaerobic inoculum and during the reactor operation. The aim is to allow the removal of this compound of citrus effluents from biomass specifies selected in accordance with the operational conditions to be employed in the reactor. Therefore, the search for effective removal of d-limonene of wastewater may enable the functional improvement of employees by the citrus industry (AU)
