Abstract

Since 2010 the World Health Organization established the interprofessional collaborative practice (ICP) as a strategy to replace the biomedical care model. The ICP is a process in which professionals from different areas of health work together in partnership with patients, families and community to positively impact the quality of health care. The partnership between health care team, patients, family and community has the potential to develop shared and realistic plans of care that increase health care effectiveness. This partnership can also trigger community participation in health services, as observed in the management councils of the Brazilian Health Care System (SUS). This proposal of visiting researcher program highlights the need for partnership between health care teams, patients, families and community in the context of primary and specialized care in the SUS. The proposal addresses particularly ICP in chronic diseases, cancer and end of life care. In these contexts there is a high demand for complex interventions in partnership between users, families and health professionals. There is a growing interest in ICP and a global need to involve patient, family and community in the context of basic and specialized care. However, there are difficulties and resistance to this change, and the establishment of partnerships with international research institutions is necessary. This visiting researcher program aims to promote collaboration between Dr. Christopher Bailey (Faculty of Health Sciences/University of Southampton, United Kingdom) and researchers from Post Graduate Programs of the School of Nursing/University of Sao Paulo, Brazil). The collaboration will involve ongoing research projects on issues of primary care and specialized care, with emphasis on the involvement of users, family, and community and staff in health care. Dr. Christopher Bailey is an Associate Professor and Director of the Faculty Graduate School at the Centre for Innovation and Leadership in Health Sciences, Faculty of Health Sciences. He has teaching experience in Qualitative research methods (e.g. textual analysis, grounded theory, biographical disruption), Evidence-based practice in health and social care and Development of non-pharmacological interventions for symptoms in cancer and palliative care. Dr. Bailey is internationally recognize for his scientific publications on nursing, cancer, palliative care with many research projects in collaboration. The experience and research dedication in complex interventions and end of life care guided Dr. Bailey´s interest to projects in two main themes: involvement of community, volunteers in health care delivery and development of strategies to support careers and people in end of life care. Currently the professor has been studying initiatives to engage community in health care in the United Kingdom. Dr. Bailey is head of a research program entitled "Co-care: Volunteer-led support at home for caregiver", funded by the Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care (CLAHRC) and The National Institute of Health Research (NIHR). Description of activities with the visiting researcher: (1) Meetings with coordinators of research programs and their respective research groups to discuss, improve and establish partnerships on ongoing studies at School of Nursing/ USP. (2) Participation in two research panels regarding partnership between health care team, patients, family and community in chronic diseases, cancer and end of life care. (3) Participation in two opened lectures in a qualitative discipline at the School of Nursing. (AU)
